Two ways to record the same clinical goal
Both digital and conventional impressions aim to record teeth, tissues or implant positions accurately enough to make a fitting restoration. The better choice depends on the number and distribution of implants, access, moisture control, the scanner and components, the operator’s protocol and the method used to verify the record.
What patients notice
An intraoral scanner uses a small camera to build a three-dimensional model and may reduce the need for impression trays and material. Many patients find this easier, and the image can be reviewed immediately. Conventional impressions remain familiar, dependable and useful when a digital record is difficult or needs confirmation.
Single and short-span implant records
Clinical reviews support the use of digital implant impressions in many single-unit and shorter-span situations. Scan bodies identify implant position in the digital file. Their correct seating, visibility and compatibility must be checked.
Why the full arch is more demanding
A completely edentulous arch has fewer stable visual landmarks, and small image-stitching errors can accumulate across several implants. Evidence has evolved with newer scanners and techniques, but results remain dependent on the complete acquisition and verification protocol rather than the word digital alone.
When methods are combined
Complex full-arch cases may use splinted scan bodies, photogrammetry, conventional verification jigs, laboratory scans or a repeated clinical fit check. A hybrid workflow is not a failure of digital dentistry; it is a way to use the most reliable record for each stage.
How the record is verified
The team may compare scans, inspect scan-body seating, verify a jig or framework clinically and use radiographs when indicated. If the record is uncertain, it should be repeated or confirmed before the final prosthesis is manufactured.
The practical conclusion
Digital scanning can improve comfort, speed and communication. Conventional impressions remain valuable. The safest question is not which method sounds newer, but how accuracy will be checked for this restoration.
