Accuracy has several stages
A digital plan can be detailed, but the clinical result depends on the accuracy of every stage: imaging, scanning, data matching, virtual planning, guide design, manufacturing, seating and surgical execution.
Image and scan quality
Movement or metal artefact can reduce CBCT quality. Intraoral scans can be affected by access, soft tissue, moisture and the scanning path. Records should be checked before they are combined.
Matching the records
The CBCT and surface scan must be aligned using reliable reference areas. A visually convincing match can still be wrong, so the operator reviews the overlap in more than one view.
The prosthetic plan
Accuracy is not only placing an implant close to virtual coordinates. The position should support the planned restoration, screw access, material thickness, tissue health and cleaning.
The surgical guide
Guide support, fit, sleeve tolerance, drilling sequence, mouth opening and fixation can affect transfer. A safety margin around critical anatomy remains necessary because static guided surgery is not exact.
Digital prosthetic accuracy
For implant impressions and full-arch prostheses, scan bodies, scan strategy, implant distribution and verification influence fit. A digital workflow may still use a verification jig, photogrammetry or a conventional check.
How the clinician verifies
Fit and stability are assessed before and during surgery. Prosthetic records may be repeated or checked clinically and radiographically when indicated. If the data conflict with the clinical situation, the plan must be reconsidered.
What patients can expect
Digital tools can improve visualization, communication and reproducibility. They cannot promise an exact transfer, immediate teeth or a particular outcome. Responsible treatment makes uncertainty visible and manages it with checks.
